Accepting online payments in Hong Kong: the methods and the fees
A Hong Kong store usually wants cards (via a platform like Stripe), plus local favourites: FPS, PayMe, and Alipay or WeChat Pay. Each has different fees and setup. You do not need them all, here is how to choose a sensible mix.
The methods customers expect
In Hong Kong, most shoppers expect at least: credit and debit cards, FPS (instant bank transfer), PayMe, and often Alipay or WeChat Pay. Apple Pay and Google Pay ride on top of cards. Offering two or three of these, done well, beats offering everything half-heartedly.
Card payments (Stripe and friends)
Cards are the default for online stores, and platforms like Stripe make setup quick. Expect a percentage plus a small fixed fee per transaction (Stripe publishes around 3.4% + HK$2.35 for HK cards, check current rates). It is the easiest way to start taking money globally.
Local rails: FPS, PayMe, Alipay
FPS is bank-to-bank and very low cost, but on a website it often needs a QR or a payment link and some manual matching unless your platform integrates it. PayMe for Business and Alipay/WeChat Pay reach large local (and mainland) audiences, each with its own merchant sign-up.
Fees, settlement and the fine print
Compare three things, not just the headline rate: the percentage and fixed fee, how fast money reaches your account (settlement time), and how refunds and chargebacks are handled. Cross-currency sales can add a conversion fee. Small differences add up once you have volume.
A practical starting mix
For most new Hong Kong stores: enable cards through your store platform on day one, add FPS for fee-conscious local buyers, and add Alipay or WeChat Pay if you sell to mainland customers. Add more only when demand is real.
Common questions
Do I need a merchant account to take cards?
Not separately in most cases, platforms like Stripe act as the processor and settle to your bank account. Some local methods (PayMe for Business, Alipay) do have their own sign-up.
What are typical online payment fees in Hong Kong?
Card processing is commonly around 3, 4% plus a small fixed fee per transaction. FPS is far lower or near-free but needs more handling. Always check each provider’s current published rates.
Can I accept FPS on my website?
Yes, typically via a QR code or payment link, and some platforms integrate it so orders reconcile automatically. Without integration you may match payments to orders manually.
Is Stripe available in Hong Kong?
Yes, Stripe operates in Hong Kong and is a common default for card payments on local stores. Other processors are available too, compare fees, settlement and supported methods.
